Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. This process stimulates movement of energy within the body, allowing natural healing to take place. These points are selected based on years of training acupuncturists receive based on over 3,000 years of experience in China.

Acupuncture helps to prevent illness by improving the overall functioning of the body’s immune and organ systems. Acupuncture is helpful for:

  • Treating existing illnesses and injuries.
  • Preventing both recurrence of illnesses and new illness.
  • Improving overall health.

Acupuncture originated in China over 3,000 years ago. It is part of the holistic system of healing known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (“TCM”).

How does it work?
The Classical Chinese explanation is that energy (Qi) flows in channels (meridians) throughout the body and over its surfaces. These channels are rivers of energy which are referred to as meridians. The Chinese have identified 71 meridians in the human body, which is a basic energy map for all people. The meridians are often compared to a series of interconnected highways. Each of the major organs in the body is associated with its own meridian. Through the network of meridians the internal organs are connected to certain areas and parts of the body including the muscles, bones, joints, and also other organs.

The Chinese believe that health is a manifestation of balance, both within the body itself and between the body and the external environment. When the body is internally balanced and in harmony with the external environment, Qi flows smoothly through the meridians to nourish the organs and tissues. If an obstruction occurs in one of the meridians, the Qi is disrupted and cannot flow properly. When the Qi cannot flow smoothly or is forced to flow in the opposite direction, the body’s innate balance is disrupted and illness results.

Acupuncture points are the specific points on the meridians where the Qi is both concentrated and accessible. Acupuncture engages the Qi by inserting needles at these specific points, the goal being to restore the proper flow of Qi. As the body regains its natural balance, well-being returns.

To the human body, acupuncture needles are a physical stimulus. In Western science, a stimulus is defined as a detectable change in either the external environment or within the body itself. When the body detects change, it produces a response. Although acupuncture is not yet fully understood by Western science, with modern technology scientists can now actually begin to “see” the body’s response to acupuncture. For example, using an MRI (a very sophisticated x-ray), researchers have shown that when a needle is inserted at specific acupuncture points on the body, corresponding changes occur in the brain.

In the West, acupuncture is most well-known for its ability to relieve pain so the majority of research thus far has been done in this area. Acupuncture points are now believed to stimulate the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) to release pain-relieving chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain. Acupuncture may also stimulate other chemicals to be released by the brain, including hormones that influence the self-regulating system of the body.

Oriental medicine has been around for thousands of years, and has provided us with a unique and holistic approach to help prevent and treat disease. Western science and Traditional Chinese Medicine ultimately rely on the body’s natural healing ability to maintain health and protect against disease. Both have the same goal of helping a person stay healthy. Western science tends to use drugs and surgery as needed. Acupuncturists tend to use gentle needling and herbs. A combination of both systems creates an ideal environment of health and healing.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is a form of manual care that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of the musculoskeletal system, which in turn affects the nervous system. The nervous system controls all systems in the body, including the heart, digestive tract, and immune system. Misalignments in the spine and other joints can alter nerve function, which can affect many other functions in the body. Chiropractic care helps to align the spine, restore optimal function in the nervous system, and support the body’s natural ability to heal.

For those looking for something beyond a traditional chiropractic adjustment, we offer other forms of treatments to address health and wellbeing. Treatment can include gentle chiropractic techniques, soft tissue techniques, fascial release and other therapeutic modalities, rehabilitation and physical training, and nutrition analysis and planning.

Our board-certified chiropractors incorporate a number of different techniques to offer the best care for each individual. These adjustments can be very light and gentle or more forceful, depending on the individual patient’s needs and preferences. Our techniques include:

  • Diversified
  • Thompson
  • Logan Basic
  • Mulligan mobilization
  • McKenzie End-Range Loading
  • Activator
  • Applied Kinesiology (AK)
  • Network Spinal Analysis (NSA)
  • Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET)
  • Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT)
  • Natural Healing Systems (NHS)
  • Total Body Modification (TBM)
  • Energetic Systems Maintenance (ESM)

Cryosauna – Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC)

Whole-Body Cryotherapy is one of the most advanced therapies of its kind, circulating nitrogen-cooled air in a chamber to stimulate the body’s natural response to cold. This brief exposure elevates endorphin levels and reduces inflammation, swelling and pain: A full-body treatment, the cryosauna is an excellent alternative to ice baths or cold packs, and takes only minutes.

WBC has shown benefits for musculoskeletal, endocrine, immune and integumentary systems of the body. This therapy is great for improving athletic performance and decreasing recovery time, healing injuries, decreasing inflammation, reducing chronic and widespread pain, improving immunity, and increasing metabolism.

WBC increases metabolic rates after treatment, burning up to 800 calories. It can also benefit skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis. Clients often report feeling invigorated after a session from a boost in endorphins, and also report less pain, improved sleep, less stress, faster recovery time and increased performance.

Cupping is a type of alternative medicine used to help ease pain, enhance circulation, remove toxins, relieve sore and tight muscles, and decrease inflammation. The technique applies suction cups to the skin along meridians and fascial restrictions, which stimulates energy flow and optimizes tissue function.

While cupping may temporarily produce a red or purple circular area, the tissue is not bruised or injured. Instead, the lifting of the skin has increased local circulation, allowing stagnant blood, fluid and toxins to come to the surface so the body can dissolve it more easily. Cupping is often used to complement chiropractic care and soft tissue work, but is also offered as a treatment on its own.

Far Infrared Sauna

Far infrared (FIR) is a region in the infrared spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. Invisible to the human eye, far infrared light is felt as heat. Unlike the heat produced in traditional saunas, far infrared heat penetrates the body to a depth of 1.5 to two inches. This stimulates cellular detoxification more effectively, helping to reduce the body’s toxic load.

The far infrared sauna detoxifies the body. At the same time, it enhances the immune system; improves cardiovascular conditioning; relieves stress, pain and fatigue; helps with weight and cellulite control and mood disorders; and improves mental clarity.

The therapy is especially important for those affected by heavy metal (e.g., mercury or lead) poisoning. Chemical or heavy metal toxicity symptoms can include:

  • Allergies
  • Candida (yeast overgrowth)
  • Chemical sensitivities
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Digestive problems
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Inability to lose or gain weight
  • Low body temperature
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Nervousness or  feelings of instability
  • Night sweats
  • Persistent sadness/ loss of interest in life
  • Rashes
  • Systemic pain or generalized discomfort
  • Tremors

Our High-Tech Health Far Infrared Sauna is made of untreated, chemical-free, hypoallergenic poplar wood to maximize benefits without the odors or off-gassing interference from the wood used in other commercial saunas.

Holistic Nurse Practitioner

Joni Ball, Holistic Nurse Practitioner

Board Certified & Licensed, RN, APRN, CNM, MSN

30 Years Experience in Traditional Medicine & Holistic Healthcare

Women’s Healthcare Specialty + 15 Years Family Practice Experience

What is a Holistic Nurse Practitioner?

Our Holistic Nurse Practitioner is a medically trained, board certified and licensed Advanced Practice Nurse (umbrella for the specialties of NP, CNM, Nurse Anesthetist) with special training in holistic healing modalities.  Joni brings a unique blending of 30 years of standard medical practice plus years of training in holistic, integrative, functional and energetic medicine. Functional Medicine looks to heal the cause of symptoms. Holistic refers to evaluating the whole being.  Integrative Medicine utilizes numerous natural and alternative modalities to help healing. Energy Medicine goes one step further to the energetic level of existence that creates the physical form.

Joni uses an Integrative, Functional Medicine approach to healing that addresses the cause of health issues.  Her goal is to assist you in your healthcare needs and empower you to make positive changes that lead to health and happiness.

Why see a Holistic Nurse Practitioner?

The holistic approach can lead to true healing.  It is satisfying for both patient and practitioner as true healing occurs using natural methods that rejuvenate the body and mind.  Today the 15 minute medical visit that focuses on symptoms and treats with medication is often unsatisfying for practitioner as well as patient as the cause of issues goes untreated.  Practitioners often don’t have the time to fully evaluate all aspects of issues, nor the ability to utilize natural therapies that heal without side effects.

After 30 years of experience in the medical field and many years of additional study, Joni believes that addressing the inter-relatedness of all aspects of body function is important and overall missing in medicine today.   Some of these connections, such as the adrenal-thyroid-hormone connection and the gut-brain-immune function connection are finally becoming popular topics for books and seminars.

People are looking for ways to truly heal rather than just medicate symptoms.

True healing of the body often requires changing habits of the mind and vice versa; healing depression, anxiety and mental issues often requires healing infections, toxicity, and gut issues.  The whole being is greater than the sum of its parts and all parts are interconnected. Often the medical approach is fragmented and focused on one part. For example, women without a uterus are still considered by standard medicine not to need progesterone in menopause.  This approach fails to take into consideration the effects of what estrogen dominance will do to the breasts, weight, mental state and sleep.

The global assessment Joni uses evaluates all aspects of your health and finds the priorities your body needs to begin healing and balancing.  Once the initial priorities are addressed the next level of priorities will emerge and will need to be addressed. Usually there are three levels of priorities needing attention in order for the body to begin self-healing.  The assessment is personalized and each person is unique.

How does a Holistic Nurse Practitioner help me?

Our Holistic Nurse Practitioner helps you by addressing your unique symptoms and imbalances, finding the cause, and together creating a workable plan for healing.

The visits are extended to allow time to listen to you, assess your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs and find your priorities to heal.  An individualized plan for healing is given. Often, and especially if stress is an issue, you receive a relaxing and healing Jin Shin Jyutsu treatment.

Assessment also includes physical exam, labwork, review of your medications and supplements, review of foods and common food intolerances and evaluation for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.  Deficiencies of necessary vitamins, minerals and enzymes can lead to digestive discomfort, low energy, poor performance and susceptibility to disease.

You are also evaluated for toxicity and infections and how best to cleanse and support detoxification functions of the liver and body.

You’ve heard the quote “garbage in, garbage out” in reference to diet.  It also applies to thinking, emotions, environmental toxins and what is “brewing” in your body.  Today more than ever, there are numerous viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungal infections and toxins continually stressing our immune system.

Infections and toxins can cause fatigue, brain fog, digestive upset, pain and unwanted symptoms. When our body can no longer stay on top of the onslaught, our health starts to deteriorate. MS, Parkinson’s, Crohn’s, Colitis, Arthritis, Hashimoto’s and other autoimmune diseases are all now considered to have an infective and toxic component.  Many of the infections our body must fight internally have not yet been found by medicine or science. Inflammation is the hallmark sign and must be addressed in a natural way that supports the body to heal.

Symptoms are your body’s way of getting your attention and letting you know that something is not right.  Rather than medicate the symptoms, the functional and holistic approach to healing helps you find the cause and create an individualized healing plan.

In addition to traditional medical evaluation through history, physical and labwork, Joni is proficient in assessing physical-mental-emotional wellbeing using a unique technique that reads the body’s health priorities.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a specialized, well-researched and proven therapy that uses a pressurized chamber to treat a number of conditions. The therapy helps incorporate more oxygen into blood cells, blood plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, and other body fluids.

Our HBOT chambers pressurize to 1.3 ATA, 4 PSI. Inside the chamber, injury sites receive a healing dose of oxygen through the surrounding body fluids and plasma, even if  blood supply to the tissue has been compromised.  When there is no injury, the increase in oxygen nourishes healthy tissue.

The therapy helps heal chronic conditions and acute injuries, and helps maintain wellbeing. In particular, it has proven effective in treating concussions, stroke, autism, fertility issues, infections and sleep deprivation, and enhancing recovery after surgery.

Massage is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massage may range from light stroking to deep pressure. There are many different types of massage, including these common types:

  • Swedish massage. This is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize you.
  • Deep massage. This massage technique uses slower, more-forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, commonly to help with muscle damage from injuries.
  • Sports massage. This is similar to Swedish massage, but it’s geared toward people involved in sport activities to help prevent or treat injuries.
  • Trigger point massage. This massage focuses on areas of tight muscle fibers that can form in your muscles after injuries or overuse.
Massage is generally considered part of complementary and alternative medicine. It’s increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions and situations.

Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension.

While more research is needed to confirm the benefits of massage, some studies have found massage may also be helpful for:
  • Anxiety
  • Digestive disorders
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia related to stress
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Soft tissue strains or injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Temporomandibular joint pain

Muscle Activation Technique (MAT)

Muscle Activation Techniques was founded on the principle that human movement and exercise are fundamental to human health and that a muscle’s ability to contract efficiently is important for normal movement.  Any loss of muscle contraction efficiency may be demonstrated as a loss of motion and decreased physical performance, which many lead to pain and/or loss of physical capabilities.

A multitude of factors such as stress, trauma or overuse can contribute to muscle weakness.  When you exercise, there is a period of exertion and then recovery.  It is normal to feel fatigue. When there is stress, trauma and overuse, the muscle may not recover until properly rested.  If this is habitual (i.e. sitting at a computer for hours per day, over the course of many years), then the result can be muscle weakness.

MAT is a powerful tool that helps athletes recover from competitive stress quickly and helps them to prevent future injuries. MAT prepares the body to be more efficient in training and athletic performance.  In order to reach optimal performance capabilities, an athlete is forced to train at high intensity levels.  Because of this, there is always the risk for injury.  Some athletes may be predisposed to injury, due to muscular contraction inefficiencies that place increased stress on joints and tissues. When training at a high level, the inefficiencies are magnified, and sometimes the body can no longer handle the stress, eventually breaking down.  It’s like driving a car with bad alignment.  The faster you drive it, the faster the tires are going to wear out.  The body functions in much the same way.  By balancing the muscular system, MAT provides an improved environment for restoring physical performance.  This allows the athlete to return to sport sooner with improved  athletic capabilities.

The goal of MAT is to address the weaknesses before an injury occurs.

Nutrition Counseling

We believe in treating the whole patient, which is why we incorporate nutritional evaluation, nutrition plans, supplements, and food allergy testing into our treatment plans. We know that what you put in your body is an important part of your overall health.

Certain foods can contribute to conditions like chronic inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome or autoimmune conditions. Whether you are looking to address a certain condition, lose weight or just need support reaching your optimal health, we can help.

Nutrition consultation and planning: We will evaluate your current diet and any health concerns you are experiencing, noting that some conditions, like degenerative disc disease, have a nutritional component. We offer information, tools, and follow-up on how to transition to a whole-foods, plant-based diet that can prevent, and potentially reverse, disease. We follow up to evaluate progress and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.

Food allergy testing: Food sensitivities can be difficult to detect because symptoms may not appear until 24 to 48 hours after eating a particular food. We offer comprehensive food sensitivity testing to help you identify foods that you may have trouble digesting, causing an inflammatory response in your body. Food sensitivities can be a contributing factor in many diseases, including autoimmune conditions, asthma, and autism spectrum disorders.

Supplements: We carry only the highest-grade supplements to ensure our patients receive the best quality nutritional support. Many of the products we carry are only offered through a qualified practitioner. Unlike many products offered online and in health food stores, we only carry products that are certified to contain pure ingredients.

Pre-conception, Prenatal, and Postnatal Chiropractic

Chiropractic care can reduce the aches and pains of pregnancy by improving pelvic alignment and function. Our Webster Technique-certified doctors* use specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment to reduce the effects of misalignment and dysfunction in the pelvic region.

The Webster technique was developed as a safe way to restore proper pelvic balance and function in the mother’s body, to improve her comfort throughout pregnancy and prepare for a safer, easier birth. Having optimal pelvic alignment and a properly functioning nervous system is also ideal for those trying to conceive.

We use special tables and pillows so that moms can lay on their stomach during treatment, and feel supported during and after pregnancy.

We find that  pregnant women and new moms also benefit from soft tissue treatment to relieve aches and pains, and swollen feet and ankles. We may use RockTape kinesiology tape to provide a sling support to mama’s growing belly and take the strain off of her lower back.

We offer prenatal yoga to help prepare body and mind for the challenges of pregnancy and childbirth. We choose specific, gentle yoga postures to help open and strengthen pelvic and leg muscles, lower stress hormone levels and increase the body-mind connection.

We also offer nutritional and supplement support, testing and lifestyle modifications for preconception, pregnancy and postnatal needs.

If you are planning to conceive, we can help you prepare your body. Treatment can include

  • General chiropractic care for a healthy pelvis and properly functioning nervous system,
